Chiesa di San Pietro del Crocefisso
Chiesa di San Pietro del Crocefisso
The church of San Pietro del Crocefisso, located in the small municipality of Bulzi in Sardinia, is also commonly recognised by the names of 'San Pietro di Simbranos' or 'of the Images', reflecting its rich iconographic decoration. This sacred building is particularly notable for its distinctive two-tone colour scheme, an element that contributes to defining its unique architectural style, where the chromatic contrast visually enriches the entire structure. The façade of the church is elegant and well-proportioned, harmoniously divided into three vertical orders that contribute to the upward momentum. Each order is finely decorated with small columns and hanging arches, which not only reinforce the verticality of the building, but also add a rich ornamental detail that captures the attention of visitors. In the centre of the first order, there is a remarkable lunette housing a high relief of particular historical and artistic interest. The high relief depicts a praying figure, presumably an abbot, flanked by two monks with bushy beards, a detail that suggests a representation of religious figures of high rank and veneration. In addition to being a decorative element, this sculpture also serves as a testimony to the practices and significant persons of the monastic community of the time.
