Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

The construction of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena began in the 14th century. A parchment, found in 1885 during work on the main altar, confirms that the church was consecrated on 15 September 1388 by 'Fra Cristoforo dei Conventuali di Oristano', commissioned by Archbishop Leonardo of Oristano.
During the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries, the church underwent various restorations. Today, only a few fragments of stone decorations remain of the original structure, scattered on the side walls and above the arches.
Among the preserved decorations, one can see a coat of arms with a hand holding a chalice, heads of angels with wings in some fragments, and a coat of arms with the anagram 'IHS', where the H is surmounted by a cross and there are three nails at the bottom.

Inside the sacristy is a sarcophagus dating back to the Judicial period, decorated with bas-reliefs depicting a putto ready to take flight, two angels with outstretched wings, a Byzantine cross and a thurible. Two decorative columns on the corners support an epigraphic cornice with an inscription that should have started on the now-lost tombstone. On both sides are visible two shields, the symbol of the De Basso family, linked to the Aragonese. It is believed that the sarcophagus may be the tomb of Giovanna, daughter of Giovanni de Serra viscount of Bas and niece of Mariano II, who died at a young age shortly after the death of her father.
In the church garden, there is also a baptismal font dating back to the early 17th century. Under the front edge of the font are engraved the words 'SANCTE IOVANES', while on the opposite side is carved an angel's head with wings.
