Chiesa di Nostra Signora del Carmine

Chiesa di Nostra Signora del Carmine

The Church of Nostra Signora del Carmine in Mogoro is a fascinating example of architectural syncretism, in which elements of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic styles are harmoniously blended. Dating back to the 14th century, the structure consists of a nave covered by wooden trusses and an apse with a peculiar shape: semicircular inside and quadrangular outside. The façade, enriched with Gothic elements, is divided into three distinct parts, delimited by corner pilasters and pilaster strips. The central portal, an element of great value, is architraved and surmounted by a round arch, flanked by pilasters with clearly Gothic capitals. Above it opens a mullioned window of refined workmanship, characterised by trefoil arches inserted in ogival arches. The harmonious interaction between these different architectural elements gives the building an evocative and vibrant vision, tangible evidence of the artistic and cultural richness of medieval Sardinia.
