Parrocchia San Giovanni Battista

CHIESA DI San Giovanni Battista

The Church of San Giovanni Battista, erected around 1116 in Orotelli, represents an exceptional example of Romanesque-Pisan architecture in Sardinia. This imposing structure, built with valuable trachyte ashlars, was originally part of a larger Benedictine monastic complex, a circumstance that greatly enhances its historical and cultural value. The façade of the building is divided into three distinct sections, each characterised by specific architectural elements. The first order is dominated by an elegant portal with architrave and lunette, while the second is distinguished by a series of refined small arches resting on hanging capitals (corbels), typical of the Romanesque style, and a central oculus that ensures the illumination of the interior. The third order culminates with two sloping roofs adorned with a finely worked cornice. Of particular interest are the bas-reliefs adorning the bell gable, added at a later date. These sculptures, depicting a Roman soldier, a man with a palm tree in his hand, lambs and snakes, constitute a complex iconographic programme that deserves in-depth interpretative studies. The church plays a central role in the local celebrations dedicated to St John the Baptist, which take place on 24 June. This festivity, which sees St John as the patron saint of farmers and agriculture, has its roots in ancient pagan rituals linked to the summer solstice, highlighting the cultural and religious stratification characteristic of many Sardinian traditions.
