Chiesa di Santa Maria d’Itria
In the heart of the historical centre of Maracalagonis stands the Church of Santa Maria d'Itria, a sacred building deeply integrated into the urban fabric of the community. Its construction, which took place between the 13th and 14th centuries, testifies to a long presence in the cultural and religious scene of the place, although official documentation only dates back to the 17th century. The church's architecture is characterised by three naves separated by columns and a peculiar inverted liturgical axis, with the ancient Romanesque façade still visible at the rear of the building. The bell gable completes the external structure. Inside, the visitor's eye is drawn to the columns topped by truncated pyramid capitals and the ancient wooden ceiling, elements that give the room an atmosphere of solemn antiquity.
