Chiesa di San Pietro

Chiesa di San Pietro

Dating back to the 12th century, the church of San Pietro in Villa San Pietro embodies an example of extreme formal essentiality in Romanesque architecture. Its construction is characterised by the use of finely-worked stones, which create an evocative chromatic play of shades ranging from red to pale yellow. The façade features an engraved portal, whose iconography suggests a link with the abbey of Bonarcado. Despite its general decorative sobriety, the building does not lack elements of interest, such as the carving on the single lancet window of the apse and the round arches crowned by decorated corbels, which interrupt the simplicity of the architectural lines, giving the whole a character of refined elegance.
