Chiesa di San Ranieri

Chiesa di San Ranieri

Villamassargia, towards the end of the 13th century, became the centre of a small fiefdom established by Bonifacio dei Donoratico della Gherardesca in south-western Sardinia. In this historical context, the church of San Ranieri, dedicated to the patron saint of Pisa, was erected in 1307. Over the centuries, this sacred building established itself as the centre of community life. During the period of Aragonese and Spanish domination, the church was rededicated to Our Lady of Pilar, symbol of union between the vast domains of the Spanish crown. The façade, which blends Romanesque and Gothic elements, stands out for its decorative elegance. Finely sculpted curved leaves frame the entrance portal and the central rose window, creating an effect of great refinement. A particularly interesting iconographic element is represented by the biblical figures of Eve and the tempter serpent, which emerge among the plant elements of the Garden of Eden, adorning the horizontal frame above the entrance. Inside, dating back to the 15th-17th centuries, is a stoup of clear Iberian inspiration, decorated with suggestive reliefs of fish.
