Chiesa di San Nicola Quirra

Chiesa di San Nicola Quirra

In the panorama of Sardinian Romanesque architecture, the Church of San Nicola Quirra in Villaputzu stands out as one of the rare exceptions built in fired brick, together with San Gavino di Lorzia in Bono. Although the exact date of construction remains uncertain, scholars place it between the late 12th and early 13th century. The design of the building reveals the use of sophisticated measuring methods of the time, such as the 'Tuscan reed' and 'squaring'. The church has a single-nave structure with an east-facing apse, surmounted by a wooden roof embellished with geometric carvings. The façade is characterised by a series of decorative arches that give the building a charming appearance, culminating in an elegant bell gable with an ogival opening. These architectural elements combine functionality and aesthetics, testifying to the skill of the medieval builders and the cultural and religious importance of this sacred building.
