Chiesa di San Geminiano
Chiesa di San Geminiano
In the heart of Samassi, the Church of San Gemiliano stands out for its extraordinary historical stratification. The building stands on a pre-existing chamber tomb from the Byzantine era, incorporating reused materials, including fragments of Byzantine pillars, into its Romanesque masonry. The exterior is characterised by imposing pilasters on the sides and a façade embellished with corner pilasters. The portal is embellished with two capitals finely decorated with plant motifs. Although the precise date of construction remains uncertain, it is assumed to date back to the 13th century. The church was affiliated to the Camaldolese monastery of San Mamiliano from 1118. Inside, there is a precious marble funerary monument dedicated to Marquis Emanuele Castelvì, a work by sculptor Scipione Aprile, created in 1586.
