La Fondazione Sardegna Isola del Romanico nasce per volontà dei Comuni detentori dei beni monumentali del Romanico Sardo e dell’ Associazione Culturale Itinera Romanica-Amici del Romanico, nonché dal contributo di idee ed esperienze del partenariato esteso. Rappresenta la risultante di una costante, intensa, pluriennale e proficua collaborazione con le Università, le Soprintendenze, la Chiesa e le Istituzioni locali isolane.
The objective of Fondazione Sardinia Island of the Romanesque consists in the protection and enhancement of the vast tangible and intangible heritage of the sacred history of the Sardinian Middle Ages, of the cultural, historical, environmental and social excellences present in the entire island through the definition of actions aimed at promoting economic development, overcoming the seasonality of tourist flows, the integration and diversification of the tourist offer, the promotion of cooperation between the coastal communities and those of the inland areas, the support of youth and women's employment, the creation of stable alliances between the public and the private sector.
The Fondazione intends to contribute to increasing the attractiveness of Sardinia through the activation of programmes aimed at arousing interest and curiosity in the history and traditions of an island located at the centre of the Mediterranean, the scene in the Middle Ages of strategic alliances, diplomatic, commercial, historical and cultural relations with empires and potentates of the known world.
The Fondazione Sardinia Island of Romanesque, starting from the historical protagonism and the richness of the religious and spiritual dimension of Sardinia, as witnessed by the numerous buildings that have come down to us almost intact, wants to support the creation of a new 'tourist protagonism', in which the small and large communities of the Sardinian Romanesque will become theatres of experience through the rediscovery of ancient
pilgrimage and the identification of new tourists and visitors.
On 5 June 2021, at the Council Hall of the Municipality of Santa Giusta, the Fondazione Sardegna Isola del Romanico was established by public deed with 69 municipalities and the Associazione Itinera Romanica Amici del Romanico as founding partners in the presence of the delegates of the Sardinian Episcopal Conference, the University and the broad partnership.
On 26 October 2021, by decree of the Director of the Service - Directorate General of the Presidency - Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the Fondazione "Sardinia Island of Romanesque" is enrolled at No. 292 of the Regional Register of Legal Persons and as a result of this enrolment acquires legal personality.
After a course of 16 years the Fondazione is an operational reality.
