Chiesa di Santa Sabina

Chiesa di Santa Sabina

It is distinguished by its location adjacent to the nuraghe of the same name in Silanus, of which it reused some stone blocks in its construction. This aspect is of particular archaeological interest, highlighting the continuity of use of the site and the adaptation of pre-existing materials. The plan of the building suggests a Late Antique or Byzantine layout, later modified in the 11th century. This architectural stratification offers important clues to the evolution of building and religious practices in Sardinia. It is built using a combination of limestone and basalt, materials typical of Sardinian architecture that give the building specific aesthetic and structural characteristics. It has two portals of considerable interest: the first, located in the round part, is characterised by a gable decorated in a semicircle, while the second, in the north chamber, has a rounded shape and is distinguished by the use of imposing basalt blocks. These architectural elements not only enrich the aesthetics of the building, but also provide important information on medieval building techniques in Sardinia. It therefore represents an important historical-architectural document, bearing witness to the transition and continuity between different phases of Sardinian history, from the Nuragic period to the Middle Ages.
