Chiesa di San Pietro

Chiesa DI di San Pietro

In the heart of Suelli, the Cathedral of St Peter the Apostle stands as living testimony to the historical continuity between the ancient Roman forum and the medieval main square, the hub of commercial and social life. Although the exact date of construction is not documented, scholars assume that the building dates back to the first half of the 13th century. During the 16th century, the cathedral underwent significant renovations, including the addition of side chapels and the bell tower. Despite these changes, some valuable details of the original Romanesque layout have survived. Initially designed with a three-aisle structure, the building now features a late Gothic-style presbytery. The façade, once characterised by three elegant portals, was an element of great architectural value. On the northern side is a refined single-light window, embellished with a sculpture of an eagle in the act of seizing a hare, a detail that further enriches the artistic and symbolic value of the building.
