Chiesa di San Pietro (Suelli)

Chiesa di San Pietro

Chiesa di San Pietro

The Church of San Pietro in Villamar is distinguished by its unusual two-nave plan, a feature rarely found in Sardinian Romanesque architecture. Scholars place its construction around the second half of the 13th century. The building has a rich exterior decoration, with remarkable pointed (ogival) arches adorning all the elevations and apses. These small arches rest on elongated wall elements, known as corbels, decorated with a variety of ornamental motifs ranging from human or fantastic figures (protomes) to floral subjects (flowers, leaves), crosses and geometric latticework motifs. The façade is dominated by an imposing bell gable that rises above the main portal, giving the whole a majestic and harmonious appearance.
